In This Lesson

In this lesson, we’re giving classic Easter baskets a sustainable twist. Using secondhand baskets as our base, we’ll create custom liners from scrap fabric and you can add beautiful embroidered details to make each one feel personal and unique.

You Need

Materials

  • Wicker Basket
  • Pilot frixion pen
  • A large piece of fabric
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery needle and thread

Instructions

1
For this you will need to cut two main basket pieces and two straps. To find the measurements for the main fabric pieces, place the measuring tape around the rim from one handle to the other. Add 1 cm on to both sides for seam allowance. This measurement is your width, I'll also refer to this as the top and bottom.

2
Next measure from the outside of the basket to the inside, starting below the outer rim and ending in the centre of the basket. Add about 3cm on to this measurement, this allows for seam allowance and the bow casing. Note this measurement down, this is the depth of the basket and will make the side seams.

3
Now cut two fabric rectangles using those measurements. For the bows, cut two long fabric rectangles. Cut 6cm for the width, and for the length of the bow, take the measurement of the casing you just made and add about 80cm on.

4
To make the basket cover, you can think of it like making a bag that sits inside the basket. Place the two fabric pieces together, wrong sides facing. Measure down the sides from the top about 9cm and place a pin or mark with a fabric pen. Sew the two side seams together, starting from the bottom and stopping when you get to the marking
Instruction step 4
5
Iron the side seam allowance open on both sides so they lay flat. Then sew a line along both sides of the seam to secure, including the open section at the top.
Instruction step 5
6
Now, sew closed the bottom edge, to form the bag shape.
Instruction step 6
7
To form a casing on the top edge, fold over the fabric about 2-3cm and iron flat. Sew along the edge of the fabric, this will form a casing, like a tube for the bow to slide through. Do the same on both sides.

8
To make the bows, fold the length of the fabric over, wrong sides together and sew all the way along. Turn the fabric out the right way using the safety pin method and iron flat. Turn the raw edges in on the ends of the bow and iron flat before sewing closed. Repeat for both bows.

9
Now you can insert your bows into the bag casings, using a safety pin.
Instruction step image9
10
Place the bag inside the basket, folding the edges of the fabric over the basket rim and tie the bows on, around the handles.

Add an embroidery motif for a personal touch if you want to add something a little extra!
