Threading your sewing machine might seem tricky at first, but once you’ve done it a few times, it quickly becomes second nature. In this lesson, I’ll walk you through the process step by step, so you can feel confident setting up your machine every time.

Tips

Tip 1: Use good quality thread

Choose a high-quality thread so it glides easily through the sewing machine. Also, use the same thread weight in both the top and bobbin to avoid tension problems.

Tip 2: Snip the tail of the thread before threading

Use sharp fabric scissors to trim thread ends cleanly—frayed tails make it much harder to thread the needle.

Tip 3: Make sure the bobbin is wound correctly

Before threading the lower part of your machine, check that the bobbin is wound evenly—uneven winding can cause thread to bunch on one side.

Tip 4: Turn off the sewing machine before threading

For safety, switch off the machine before threading—your hands will be near the needle and moving parts, and you don’t want it starting accidentally.
