Whether you’re ready to upgrade or buying your very first machine, choosing the right one can really elevate your sewing experience. The right machine will make learning easier, more enjoyable, and help you build confidence from the start. Here’s what to look for when choosing your sewing machine.

Where to Shop.

You don’t need the fanciest or most expensive sewing machine to get started, there are great options for every budget and skill level. However, if you’re wondering where to begin, here are some of my favourite places to shop for sewing machines, both online and in-store.

  • AUD & NZ: Spotlight, The Warehouse, Lincraft, Brother, Sewing Machine Warehouse, Echidna Sewing

  • USA: Amazon, Walmart, JOANN, Michaels, SewingMachinesPlus

  • UK: Argos, Hobbycraft, John Lewis, Brother UK, GUR Sewing Machines, Sewing Machine World

Choosing a Beginner-Friendly Sewing Machine

When you’re starting out, the best sewing machine is one that feels simple to use but still has enough features to grow with you. Here are the key things to look for:

  • Simple, intuitive controls – so you don’t feel overwhelmed.
  • Automatic needle threader – not essential but it saves time (and your eyes!) when threading the needle.
  • Drop-in or jam-resistant bobbin – easy to insert and lets you see how much thread is left.
  • Essential stitches – a straight stitch, zigzag, and buttonhole are all you really need in the beginning.
  • Speed control and adjustable stitch length – helps you start slow and build confidence.
  • Solid build – machines with some metal parts are more durable and will last longer as your skills improve.
