Mosaic on curved or 3D surfaces adds a fun challenge, and a beautiful payoff. For this project, we’re transforming a simple cylindrical lamp base into a vibrant floral showpiece using pre-shaped tiles. It’s a great way to experiment with pattern, colour, and layout on a rounded surface, and perfect for building confidence with more sculptural mosaic projects. With the right glue, a steady hand, and a bit of patience, the results are totally worth it.

Tools & Materials

  • Lamp base with a cylindrical shape (or a cut pipe fitted over an existing base)

  • Pre-shaped mosaic tiles (petals, hearts, flowers, etc.) in multiple colours

  • Paper template (to wrap around the base for design planning)

  • Pencil or chalk (for marking guide lines on the lamp)

  • Ruler (for drawing straight guide lines and stabilising the lamp while working)

  • Thick, fast-grab tile adhesive (suitable for vertical/curved surfaces)

  • Small spatula or glue spreader (optional, for applying adhesive)

  • Grout (in your chosen colour, ideally non-sanded for small tile gaps)

  • Grout applicator or gloves (to press grout into small areas)

  • Sponge and clean water (for wiping grout off tiles)

  • Microfibre cloth (for final polish)

  • Tile sealant (to protect and finish the piece)
